چکیده

Oak forests throughout the world are in a state of decline due to lack of oak seedling recruitment to larger size classes. Much of this recruitment decline has been attributed to changes in ecosystem disturbance regimes that have led to increased competition from other species. The Midwest Driftless Area forests in the United States are currently dominated by large oak trees of three species: Quercus alba L., Q. macrocarpa Mich., and Q. rubra L. These oak forests currently provide habitat for a large variety of flora and fauna, recreational opportunities for people, and an important timber resource. We examined the current status of forest composition and structure of Midwest Driftless Area oak forests. We were specifically interested in understanding how two invasive shrubs, Lonicera tartarica L. and Rhamnus cathartica L., might contribute to the decline of oak recruitment. We found that the recruitment of oak species is poor in comparison to other canopy tree species, including Acer saccharum Marsh. and Tilia americana L., and that the majority of saplings are of non-oak species. Our results revealed

Reconstructing Vegetation Past: Pre-Euro-American Vegetation for the Midwest Driftless Area, USA

Historical reference conditions provide important context for creating ecological restoration and management plans. The U.S. 19th Century Public Land Survey (PLS) records provide extensive ecological information for constructing such reference conditions. We used PLS records to reconstruct pre-Euro-American tree species cover class and vegetation structure types for the Midwest Driftless Area, ...

بررسی پدیده زوال بلوط در درختان با ابعاد تاج مختلف در جنگل های زاگرس میانی (مطالعه موردی: ایلام)

Oak decline is an eminent factor, which has a significant role in degradation and change in Zagros forests. The goal of present study was to assess the crown surface area of oak trees in Sarableh forests, Ilam province. For this purpose, permanent sample plots were used. Eighty sample plots with 10 Ar area were applied based on systematic-random method in a 150×200 survey network in 120 ha. The...

Assessment of geostatistical and interpolation methods for mapping forest dieback intensity in Zagros forests

During recent years, oak decline has been widely spread across Brant’s oak (Quercus Brantii Lindl.) stands in the Zagros Mountains, Western Iran, which caused large-area forest dieback in several sites. Mapping the intensity and spatial distribution of forest dieback is essential for developing management and control strategies. This study evaluated a range of geostatistical and interpolation m...

The impact of fire on the forest and plants diversity in Iranian Oak forest

Fire, as a natural ecological disturbance factor in forest, this study located in the Marivan region, Northern Zagros forest, and western Iranian state of Kurdistan. In each burned and unburned area 30 circle sample plot (1000 m2) were collected by randomized–systematic method in the 100×200 m net (in total 60 plots). In every sample plot the kind of species, number of tree, the heig...

The effect of ecophysiography on the quantitative characteristics of DBH, height, basal area, crown diameter and canopy area of trees in mountain forest communities (Case study: Oak-hornbeam community in Arasbaran forest)

Ecophysiography is the geography of the earth and the relationship between physiography and the ecosystem. Ecophysiography is a basis for planning processes to study the characteristics of terrestrial systems concerning the interactions between terrestrial physiography and living organisms. Due to the current state of ecosystems and the increase in natural disasters for ecosystem sustainability...
